British arrived at Shimla in early 1800s and declared this place as their summer capital in 1864. The left this place a long time ago but still it enjoys the same status. Thousands of visitors comes here every year.

I made a plan to travel to Shimla with my friends. We started our journey from Chandigarh 6 am in the morning. It’s always difficult to wake up so early in the morning so I packed during the night, otherwise I always forget something when I pack in the morning.

Ways to Reach Shimla

We reached Shimla around 11am so it took us almost 5 hours by car. It always depends upon the traffic and the stops you take on the way

Shimla Hill Station is very well connected and you can reach here either by road, air or train. Jubarhati is the nearest airport. There are regular flights going from Jubarhatti to Chandigarh and Delhi.

The fun way is to travel by Train. The famous toy train that travels between Kalka and Shimla. You can reach Kalka by either a train from Delhi or Chandigarh and then take the Toy Train. The entire journey is on a narrow gauge rail track, covering a distance of 96 kilometers in about 7 hours.

If you want to get here by Bus, then there are regular buses to Shimla Hill Station from almost all major cities in North India. Chandigarh is at a distance of 117 kilometers from Shimla, Manali at 260 kilometers and Delhi at 343 kilometers.

The best way to travel is by your own vehicle. Because road trips are always awesome.

Where to stay in Shimla

After reaching there first thing was to find a hotel because we all were tired. We found a nice hotel with the help of an agent.

Shimla is one of the most visited hill stations in India which means that finding a place to stay is wasy. Hotels are available in every range. You can easily find a room here for as low as Rs. 500 – Rs. 700 per night. The moment you enter Shimla, you will have agents chasing you for a good hotel deal.

If you want to book in advance that is totally upto you. If you are not sure then reach Shimla and find a hotel as you like, you can negotiate the price.

Mall Road 

The Mall Road is the main street in Shimla Hill Station. It’s the centre of attraction. With time the old buildings have been overrun by new architecture. Cafes, restaurants and social hangouts on Mall Road are popular with locals and tourists.

I wore the Traditional dress of Shimla and took cool shots. I always like to wear different kind of traditional dresses. The name of this Traditional dress is Pattoo. Women wear Pattoo over their clothes and pin both ends with local silver broaches called ‘Boomini’ which is a silver long chain.

It covers the whole body and piece of is tied around the waist, which acts as a belt. Dhatu or Thipu is a square piece of cloth used to cover the head. These Shawls are world famous because of their beautiful designs and bright colors.

The scenery on the Mall Road is spectacular. It is breathtaking. We roamed around the whole area. The night market is beautiful. When the lights are on, it triples the beauty of Mall Road.

The Christ Church

Christ Church is one of the oldest Churches in North India and was built by the British in 1857 to serve the Anglican British Community. The majestic appearance and stunning location makes it the prime location in Shimla Hill Station.

The Church has stained glass windows which represents faith, hope, charity, patience and humanity. It is one of the long lasting legacies of British Rule in India and also Shimla’s most popular landmark.

The Church building is constructed in the Neo-Gothic style of architecture. While travelling to Shimla Hill Station you must visit this Church.

The Best time to Visit Shimla

The time from March to June are fairly considered as the best time to visit Shimla Hill Station. The temperature at this time will range between 10°C to 28°C. This is the time when the weather is neither too cold nor warm and both days and nights are pleasant.

If you areplanning a winter tip and wants to see plenty of snow, then the time from January and February will be the best time to visit. Temperature however at this time can be as low as −4 °C, so carry warm clothes while visiting in winter.

If you like the lush green valley; and different type of flowers blossoming all around than the time of July, August and September would be best to visit Shimla Hill Station. This is the time when the monsoon is either in the valley or has just passed and breathes in life to the fauna and flora of the region.

I went there in September. It was raining there but I love rain so I enjoyed the weather there. The rain there was suddenly stopping and starting, It looks like a magic to me. It was my best trip.

Which Clothes to Carry

If you are travelling in summer, pack light cottons for the day as the sun is quite strong. The temperature may drops in the evening so carry a light jacket.

If you are travelling Shimla Hill Station in the winter carry warm clothes and a warm jacket. When it snows carry boots, gloves, a cap and warm scarf.

If visiting in summer, packing a good Sunblock lotion and sunglasses will be a good idea.


Shimla Hill Station remains open for tourism throughout the year and have different colors in every season. The time from June till September will have lush green and well blossomed valleys; January and February will cover Shimla under a thick sheet of white.

Shimla Hill Station is the most visited tourist location in North India because it is perfect for couples and adventure lovers. The enchanting beauty of this hill station has attracted countless filmmakers and cinematographers. It is very well connected by road so getting here is not a problem.
